Our son David, age 16, wanted the experience of living with a family in Spain this past summer. Adriana Isaza-Mohring listened to him and based on his age, maturity level and interests- matched him up with two families! David spent two weeks with each (one in Valencia and the other in Madrid). Adriana communicated with David and the families on a regular basis from the introductions to the travel arrangements before, during and after the visits. The experience exceeded our expectations and while he was proficient in Spanish before the summer, now David has much advanced in his understanding and communication skills (as well as in his cultural experiences and eating great Spanish food!). And he has wonderful new friends now throughout Spain!

My trip was organized through Adriana, who communicated with two families residing in Madrid, and Valencia, Spain. I initially expressed my interest to travel abroad alone to Adriana a few months before the summer of 2013, and she immediately mentioned that she had plenty of contacts scattered all over Spain. Adriana initiated the process by reaching out to interested families, and asking if they had room for a house guest. Once she thought she found two families that would work for me, she emailed me and sent along their contacts to my mother as well. From there it was all logistics, which Adriana gracefully helped to settle, especially given the language barrier between my parents and my host family’s parents.

I absolutely loved every activity I did on my trip to Spain. With my first family I played tennis and swam at the local community club, while going out during the evenings to the local mall where I could socialize and practice Spanish. I took some trips to the city of Madrid, and explored the museums and restaurants using metro and bus as transportation. With my second family, it was all about independence which was essential for me.

I stayed with host families, and each family welcomed me whole heartily and completely into their home, with no reservations. I ate dinner most nights with the families, tasting the delicious typical home-cooked Spanish food the Mothers and Fathers cooked for me. The food was really delicious. The relationships I formed on my trip will last forever. I still text the kids there, and even talk to both sets of parents keeping them updated about my life.Check out some of my pictures.
